Veteran Secret Service agent Frank Horrigan is a man haunted by his failure to save President Kennedy while serving protection detail in Dallas. Thirty years later, a man calling himself "Booth" threatens the life of the current President, forcing Horrigan to come back to protection detail to confront the ghosts from his past.
Frank Horrigan is a Secret Service Agent. He currently does mostly undercover work. He goes to check on a report about a person who is threatening the life of the President. When he goes to the man's apartment, he finds clippings and photos of various assassinations throughout history. When he does a background check, he discovers that the man's identity is false. So he goes back to the apartment to get him, but when he goes in there, he finds the apartment cleaned out except for a photo of him when he was in Dallas, November 1963, protecting Kennedy. Later he gets a phone call from the man and tells him that he plans to kill the President and is daring Frank to stop him. When Frank reports to his superiors, he finds that there are some people like the agent in charge of protecting the President and the Chief of Staff, who think that Frank is letting his failure to protect Kennedy cloud his judgement. But as Frank chases him down, he discovers that he is not dealing with a nut but with a well organized individual.
One of the better of Eastwood's later directorial and acting efforts. A formulaic suspense film, but it holds one's interest well and the characters are well-drawn and played. Rene Russo plays one of the better of Eastwood's female foils, and the interplay between them is very good. Script and pacing are excellent. Malkovich is disturbingly creepy in the sort of role he does so well. A good popcorn-burner.
One of the most intelligent and mature action/thriller films you will find. Eastwood and Malkovich are perfect for their parts. Writing and directing are superb as is the score by Ennio Morricone. Truly a film to be emulated.
With all of that going for it, it's hard to see how In the Line of Fire could be anything less than rock-solid entertainment-and, indeed, it is. Yet it's never more than that.
The old British BBFC 15 versions are all cut by approx. 8 seconds. Several death scenes were affected, e.g. the killing with a plastic bag, the breaking of necks and a shootout. All cuts were waived for the Blu-ray release. An empty pistol is considerably lighter than one with a clip loaded, an untrained civilian might not be able to tell the difference, but someone with proficient firearms training can. This is not an exact science, however, as it does not account for chambered rounds. Horrigan could tell by the weight that there was not a clip in the pistol. There could have still been one in the chamber, but his instincts suggested there was not, and in this instance, his instincts proved right. He also thumbs back the hammer allowing him to see there is no round in the chamber.
